The Motorola MT7711 is relatively compact at 9.1 x 2.6 x 2.6 inches, has a gray finish and a black stand.

• Several indicator lights on the front of the device let you know if it is on, if there is traffic on your network, and if devices are connected to the wireless network.
• The indicator lights are easy to understand and see, something you rarely find on a cable company modem.
• The MT7711 has a power connector on the back and a coaxial connector that you can use to connect the cable from your service provider to the device.
• Also, there are four (4) Local Area Network (LAN) ports if you want to connect your computers and other devices directly to the modem using an Ethernet cable.
• With more devices like smart home hubs that require an Ethernet connection, it would have been nice to see a few more LAN connectors on the back.
• One thing to note is that the modem holder makes the 9-inch case best for vertical placement. You can always put it aside, but it makes you look pretty messy.

Since the Motorola MT7711 is a combo cable modem and router, you must connect it to the coaxial cable from your ISP to connect the Internet to your home.

• This can reduce your placement locations a little, as your ISP will often install coaxial cables in less-than-ideal locations.
• In general, if you can choose where to install it, you want the coaxial cable to come from an inconspicuous corner rather than unsightly in the middle of the living room.
• Unfortunately, this is bad for the routers, which work best in a central location in your house or apartment so that the signal covers all the places you need.
• If you can’t find a good spot near other wireless devices, walls, metal, and other barriers that can interfere with the signal, consider investing in a coaxial cable extender.
• One more thing but essential to know: The Motorola branding for the device makes it clear that it was developed exclusively for Comcast Xfinity. If you do not use this ISP provider, your modem will not work on the network.

The Motorola MT7711 is a DOCSIS 3.0 24×8 modem that also functions as a WLAN router. It features 24 downstream channels, so it can potentially reach a download speed of 1 GB/s.

• There are 8 upstream channels to upload at a maximum of 246 MB/s. This is a fairly standard set of connectivity protocols that makes it much faster than 16×4 modems but slower than 32×8 modems.
• The router is AC1900.The “AC” stands for dual-band support, so wireless signals can be transmitted on two frequencies – 2.4GHz and 5GHz. The 2.4 GHz band has a more extended range and is slower, while the 5 GHz band is not only faster but also less susceptible to interference from other wireless devices compared to the 2.4GHz band. However, this comes at the expense of a shorter range.

Once the modem is connected, it delivers excellent speeds, and you can reliably take advantage of the 600 MB/s rate plan when connected through the LAN ports.

• You will want to test and place the modem in a location where it can reach most of the devices in your home.
• However, if you have been forced to place the router in a less than ideal location due to the limitations of the coaxial cable, your radio signal will not go as far as you want it to.
• Whether you live in a large apartment or a modest house, the performance of the MT7711 will not disappoint.

The MT7711’s integrated software can also be customized.

• Once your router is configured, you can navigate to a specific IP address in your web browser (instructions indicate which one) to change settings, including the default network name, enable password protection, and change the channel used by your router to communicate, and more.
• Also, there is an advanced page where you can enable parental controls or configure a firewall. Overall, the settings are clear, easy to change, and easy to understand.

• The Power Boost technology increases the WiFi signal up to the limit value set by the FCC to extend the WiFi range and achieve higher WiFi speeds.
• It supports Comcast Xfinity Voice features, including Caller ID on televisions.

• DOCSIS 3.0 Limitation: If you upgrade your services to a gigabit plan, you will need to upgrade your device.
• VOIP Limited to Comcast: Voice lines in this model apply only to Comcast and Xfinity services. If you switch providers and need voice lines, you will need a different device.
• Some users report that this unit does not last long.

The Motorola MG7711 has close competition, including the TP-Link Archer CR1900 Router. It also supports AC1900, DOCSIS 3.0 24×8, and has 4-Gigabit compatible LAN ports, so it can handle 4K streaming and online gaming on many devices.

The only slight advantage of the TP-Link Archer is that it comes with the Tether application for iOS and Android, so you can manage the router and modem from your mobile device instead of being limited to a web portal. It is up to you to decide if that is worth the extra money.
